RFI Ghana Launches Read Legate Project to Boost Literacy in Greater Accra
Read Foundation International (RFI), a prominent non-governmental organization, has initiated a new literacy project aimed at enhancing reading skills among young children in the Greater Accra region. The project, named the Read Legate Project, was launched in the Ayawaso Central Municipality in collaboration with Kania Foundation, another education-focused nonprofit.
The launch event was attended by key stakeholders, including education officials and school children. Umar Alhassan, RFI’s Project Manager, highlighted the project’s alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 4, which seeks to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
Alhassan emphasized that the Read Legate Project is designed to foster a habit of voluntary reading among children, supported by an assessment system to enhance vocabulary and comprehension skills.
“We aim to reach over 50,000 learners by the end of the project cycle in 2030,” said Alhassan, expressing optimism about the project’s impact on literacy and learning.
For the past decade, RFI has been active in the Northern regions of Ghana, where it has successfully promoted a culture of reading and improved educational quality. The launch of the Read Legate Project marks RFI’s strategic move to extend its operations to southern Ghana. Issah Abdul Wahab, the Director of RFI, praised the support from education sector stakeholders in the Ayawaso Central, which has been crucial for the project’s implementation.
Madam Felicia Adu Mensah, speaking on behalf of the Ayawaso Central Municipal Director of Education, lauded RFI’s initiative. She noted the pressing need for such a project, given the current low reading culture among children. She assured RFI of the full support from education authorities to ensure the success of the Read Legate Project in the municipality.
