UDS School of Economics Holds Second Public Lecture on Research and Innovation

The School of Economics of the University for Development Studies (UDS) has held its second Public Lecture Series at the Nyankpala Campus, bringing together academics, students, and development practitioners to examine the role of research and innovation in strengthening higher education in Africa.

Held under the theme “Research and Innovation Development in Higher Educational Institutions: Understanding the Landscape,” the lecture underscored the need for universities, particularly in developing economies, to build strong research capacity, promote collaboration, and diversify funding sources.

Principal of the UDS Nyankpala Campus, Prof. Mohammed Muniru Iddrisu, highlighted the importance of establishing a dedicated Faculty of Economics within UDS. He noted that the faculty continues to play a critical role in training highly skilled economists whose expertise contributes meaningfully to national development.

He also commended the Vice-Chancellor of UDS, Prof. Seidu Al-Hassan, for the establishment of a research fund to support innovative projects aimed at addressing societal challenges.

Speaking on the aim of the lecture, Prof. Awuni Joseph explained that the lecture series was aimed at deepening students’ understanding of emerging innovations in economics. According to him, exposing students to advanced research insights is essential in preparing them to respond effectively to the rapidly changing global economic environment.

The guest speaker, Prof. Felix A. Asante, of the University of Ghana, delivered a presentation on resource mobilization in higher education institutions. He observed that although Africa generates many innovative ideas, the continent continues to lag behind in attracting and sustaining research funding.

Drawing on examples from Europe, Prof. Asante noted that institutions such as SCIR remain among the largest beneficiaries of European Union research funding, demonstrating the benefits of well-structured and coordinated systems. He urged African governments and universities to strengthen their funding frameworks to fully harness the continent’s intellectual potential.

Prof. Asante further emphasized the need for stronger collaboration between the Ministry of Education and other state agencies to secure scholarships for students.

He also called on African countries to invest deliberately in research to support the commercialization of innovations, urging universities in Ghana to collaborate when applying for research grants rather than working in isolation.

To ensure long-term sustainability, he recommended the diversification of funding sources and the strengthening of capacity-building initiatives across higher education institutions.

As a mark of appreciation, the Dean of the School of Economics, together with the Principal of the Nyankpala Campus, presented a beautifully designed smock and a plaque to Prof. Felix A. Asante for his valuable contribution to the lecture series.
