Legendary Highlife Singer Prince Mahama Endorses Don Sigli
Veteran Ghanaian highlife musician Prince Mahama has endorsed fellow highlife artiste Don Sigli, describing him as one of the most mature musicians of the current generation.
Speaking on Majority Radio’s Voice of Majority morning show, Prince Mahama, who pioneered highlife music in Tamale, praised Don Sigli for producing clean and positive music.
He said if he had unreleased songs and had to choose a contemporary artiste to record them, he would “unhesitatingly” choose Don Sigli.
According to him, Don Sigli’s music stands out for its maturity, positive lyrics and avoidance of musical beefs against fellow artistes.
He expressed concern about what he described as a decline in positive and meaningful lyrics among some contemporary musicians, urging artistes to channel their creativity into messages that can contribute to positive change rather than engaging in musical battles.
Prince Mahama, who is visually impaired and has continued to lead a musical band he founded in 1984, also compared the music of his generation with that of contemporary artistes.
He criticised what he described as increasing vulgarity in some modern songs and called on musicians to be more responsible with their lyrical content.
He made the comments in an interview with Alhaji Mohammed Gadafi and co-host Iddrisu Kumbundoo on Majority Radio’s Voice of Majority.
