Dombos Deny Backing Bryan Acheampong, Reaffirms Support for Bawumia
Report: Iddrisu Kumbundoo

The Dombo family has publicly disowned claims that it is backing New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirant and Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr Bryan Acheampong, describing a newspaper headline to that effect as misleading and inaccurate.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, January 6, and signed by Tracy Rabiatu Dombo and Alexandra Dombo Tenadu, the family said it was compelled to clarify its position following a banner headline published by The Chronicle newspaper which read, “DOMBO FAMILY BACKS BRYAN.”
According to the statement, the Dombo family has at no point endorsed or supported Dr Acheampong in connection with the NPP’s flagbearership contest scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026.
The family stressed that the headline did not reflect its “publicly stated position, convictions, or values.”
“For the avoidance of doubt, the Dombo family’s position has been clear, consistent, and grounded firmly in principle,” the statement said, adding that the family has openly and deliberately expressed support for Vice President, H.E. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, based on merit, leadership qualities, and vision.
The family explained that its support for Dr Bawumia is informed by what it described as his intellectual depth, resilience, calm leadership style, and commitment to Ghana’s long-term development.
It further noted that his record in economic management, digital innovation, and public sector reform sets him apart as the most credible option to lead the party into the future.
Emphasising its political heritage, the Dombo family stated that its name and legacy are rooted in integrity, service, inclusion, and sacrifice, and should not be “repurposed to serve transient political narratives or sensational headlines.”“Our support for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has never been driven by personal relationships, material inducements, or sectional considerations,” the statement said, describing the endorsement as a reasoned decision based on competence, integrity, and vision rather than personality politics. The family also highlighted Dr Bawumia’s inclusive approach to politics, arguing that his leadership aligns with the founding ideals of the NPP and offers the party an opportunity to broaden its appeal, reconnect with grassroots supporters, and inspire a new generation. The statement criticised The Chronicle for what it termed a failure of responsible journalism, noting that the publication risked misleading the public and party faithful by attributing to the family a position it had “neither discussed nor adopted.”The Dombo family has consequently called on the newspaper to correct the alleged misrepresentation and urged media houses to uphold accuracy, context, and verification, particularly when reporting on issues involving respected family names and political legacies. The family concluded by reaffirming its commitment to contributing constructively to national discourse and said its public interventions would continue to be guided by conviction, substance, and the long-term interest of Ghana.“This clarification is issued in good faith and in the interest of the public record,” the statement added.
