Why Bawumia Should Retain NAPO as His Running Mate
As Ghana quietly edges toward the 2028 general elections, conversations within political circles are increasingly turning to strategy rather than slogans. For Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, one of the most consequential decisions ahead will be whether to retain Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, widely known as NAPO, as his running mate.
In a political climate where change is often mistaken for progress, continuity, when properly justified, can be a powerful electoral statement. The Bawumia–NAPO partnership is no longer a political experiment. It is a tested combination that has endured the pressures of governance, public scrutiny, and electoral competition. NAPO’s years in public service, particularly as Minister for Education and later as Minister for Energy, have placed him at the centre of some of the most ambitious and politically sensitive policies of the Fourth Republic. The implementation of Free Senior High School alone altered the educational landscape and redefined social mobility for thousands of Ghanaian families. Whether praised or criticised, the policy cemented NAPO’s reputation as a leader willing to take bold decisions and stand by them.In electoral politics, familiarity breeds trust.
Voters are more inclined to support leadership teams they understand than gamble on new political pairings whose chemistry and competence remain untested. Retaining NAPO allows Dr. Bawumia to present a ticket that does not require reintroduction or justification. The Ashanti Region continues to serve as the electoral backbone of the New Patriotic Party, providing not only large vote margins but also dependable turnout. NAPO’s strong political roots and influence in the region make him a strategic asset rather than a ceremonial figure. When combined with Dr. Bawumia’s appeal across the Northern Regions, Zongo communities, and among younger voters, the ticket reflects a balance that aligns with the NPP’s traditional electoral strength.
Beyond numbers, political style matters. Dr. Bawumia is often perceived as calm, analytical, and technocratic, preferring policy explanations to political theatrics. NAPO, by contrast, is outspoken, combative, and unapologetic in his defence of party positions. This contrast has proven effective rather than problematic.
