Ghanaian contemporary artist Ibrahim Mahama has been awarded the 2026 Arnold Bode Prize, one of Germany’s respected honours in contemporary art.
The award was presented to Mahama during a ceremony at the Kasseler Kunstverein in Kassel, Germany, in recognition of his ambitious artistic practice and contributions to contemporary art.
Ibrahim’s work explores themes of labour, migration and global economies through large-scale installations and the creative use of materials, often drawing attention to social, economic and historical realities.

An exhibition presented in connection with the award is currently on display at the Kasseler Kunstverein and will run until November 1, 2026.Meanwhile, Mahama’s major exhibition, The Harvest Season, is showing at the Fondation Cartier in Paris, France, until February 28, 2027.
The recognition adds to the international visibility of the Ghanaian artist, whose work engages audiences with questions about history, economic systems and the experiences of people across different societies.

In a message expressing gratitude for the recognition, Mahama thanked the Mayor of Kassel, the artistic director of documenta 15 and the award committee for the honour.
He also acknowledged the support he had received from collaborators and the artistic community, particularly his “big brother” Bonaventure Ndikung, whom he credited with bringing him into the project several years ago.
