Regional GJA Awards Launched

The Northern Regional chapter of the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) has launched the 2024 GJA Awards at a ceremony held at the conference hall of the Northern Regional Coordinating Council. The event was attended by journalists, media practitioners, and partners, celebrating excellence in journalism and underscoring the critical role of journalists in society.

In his keynote address, Mr. Yakubu Abdul Majeed, the Northern Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association, highlighted the significance of this year’s awards, which will culminate on 14th September 2024. He emphasized the unique challenges faced by the Northern Region as it becomes the focal point of national attention with the upcoming general elections. The two dominant political parties have flagbearers hailing from the Northern Region, amplifying the responsibility of journalists in maintaining peace and stability.

“Journalists must discharge their duties with utmost care and diligence to maintain peace before, during, and after the elections,” Mr. Abdul Majeed stated. He announced the theme for this year’s awards: “Ensuring Violence-Free Elections: The Role Of The Media,” reflecting the association’s commitment to promoting peaceful elections.

Rev. Prof. Albert Luguterah, a Council Member of the Northern Region Peace Council, commended the association for its efforts in projecting the region positively and promoting peace. He pledged pledged the support of the National Peace Council to the awards scheme, recognizing its importance in fostering a peaceful environment, especially as the general election gets near.

In a speech read on his behalf, the Northern Regional Minister, emphasized the critical role of the media in ensuring peace and stability. Hon. Shani Alhassan Shaibu urged journalists, especially those working on radio, to adhere to professional ethics to avoid jeopardizing the region’s peace.

“The theme of the awards is not only timely but also appropriate, as the government and other stakeholders are working hard to ensure peaceful elections on December , 2024,” he noted.

The Awards scheme is open to all journalists in the five regions of the North.
