UDS to Represent Africa at World University Football Championship

The University for Development Studies (UDS) is set to represent both Ghana and the African continent at the upcoming 3rd World University Football Championship in China.
This feat follows their resounding victory at the African qualifiers held last year in Nigeria, where UDS emerged as continental champions.
The global tournament will feature 16 top university teams from around the world, with UDS standing as Africa’s representative.
Their qualification marks the first time a Ghanaian university has reached this level of international university football competition.
On Thursday, May 22, 2025, a delegation from the University paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Kofi Adams, to present their victory and forthcoming participation.
The delegation was led by Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. Elliot Alhassan and included Registrar Mr. Nurudeen Issah Abubakar, Director of Sports Mr. Shaibu Ibrahim Tanko, Deputy Director of Finance Dr. Alhassan Iddrissu, Head of Registry Alhaji Yussif Abdulai, and Director of Public Affairs Mr. Abdul-Hayi Moomen.

Hon. Kofi Adams commended the university’s sports leadership and the football team for their remarkable accomplishment, describing it as “not just a sporting victory, but a symbol of Africa’s rising potential on the global sports stage.”
He emphasized the championship’s significance, noting it as an opportunity for global exposure, enhanced sports diplomacy, and stronger educational and cultural ties with host country China.
To support the University’s campaign, the Ministry of Youth and Sports announced a comprehensive package, including:
Mobilization of corporate sponsorships;
Collaboration with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) for preparatory matches;
Consideration for a pre-tournament training camp at the Winneba Sports College;
Development of short- and long-term support strategies, including the establishment of a National Sports Fund.
