NPP Mourns Death of Yaa Naa Abukari II

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially expressed profound sadness following the death of His Majesty Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II, the Overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom.
In a statement issued on July 14, 2026, by the Party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP extended its deepest condolences to the chiefs, the people of Dagbon, and the entire nation of Ghana.
The party paid glowing tribute to the late King, highlighting his reign as one marked by wisdom, humility, and a steadfast dedication to peace, unity, and development.
The NPP emphasized that the King’s leadership was instrumental in consolidating reconciliation within Dagbon and strengthening the institution of chieftaincy as a key partner in Ghana’s democratic governance and national development.
The party further acknowledged with gratitude the late Yaa Naa’s constructive engagement with successive governments and his commitment to initiatives that improved the socio-economic wellbeing of his people, noting that his advocacy for education, infrastructure, and peaceful coexistence leaves an enduring legacy.
Yaa Naa Mahama Abukari II died on Sunday, July 12, in South Africa, after he was sent for treatment over undisclosed sickness.
He has since been buried in accordance with traditions and customs of the Dagbang Kingdom.
