Former Finance Minister Pledges GhC 200k Support for Brilliant but Needy UDS Students

Former Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, on Friday[May 16, 2025], pledged to donate GHS 200,000 to the Students Financial Aid Scheme (SFAS) of the University of the Development Studies to support brilliant-but-needy students of the University.
The pledge was made during a ceremony at the Dr. Andani Andan Academic Chamber on the Tamale Campus, where the first batch of 120 SFAS beneficiaries received their financial support.

The SFAS, initiated by the Office of the Dean of Students, addresses the financial challenges of brilliant but needy students. The scheme was developed in response to the growing number of students whose education was threatened by poverty.
During the event, students, faculty, and families gathered to celebrate the success of the initiative and witness an emotional and inspiring day in UDS history.

Dr. Amin Adam, who made an unplanned appearance while on a private visit to the campus, was welcomed by Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Elliot Haruna Alhassan. In his remarks, Prof. Alhassan praised Dr. Adam and Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, the current Minister for Education, as inspiring figures and role models for young people.
In a speech, Dr. Amin Adam reflected on his own struggles as a student and emphasized the importance of education as a tool for transformation. His donation, he said, was an investment in the region’s future, and he urged beneficiaries to use the opportunity to uplift their families and communities.
Dean of Students, Prof. Alhassan Musah, lauded the impact of collective action, describing the SFAS as a symbol of hope and transformation. The Dean lauded Dr. Amin’s effort, saying his generosity further boost the scheme’s mission to support underserved students and ensure no dream is lost to financial hardship.
