Reports in the media suggesting that former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his wife, Hajia Samira Bawumia, were evacuated from Qatar have sparked public concern about their safety.

However, a statement issued by Akbar Yussif Rohullah Khomeini, Special Aide to Dr. Bawumia, has clarified that the couple is safe and in good condition.

According to the statement, Dr. Bawumia and his wife left Doha, Qatar, on Wednesday morning for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah, an important Islamic pilgrimage undertaken by Muslims.

The statement further disclosed that the couple is scheduled to commence the Umrah rites on Thursday, March 5, 2026. They are expected to depart Saudi Arabia on Saturday, March 7, 2026, after completing the religious exercise.

The clarification was issued to allay fears and assure the public that there is no cause for alarm regarding the safety of the opposition NPP Presidential Candidate and his wife.

The couple’s gulf journey comes against the backdrop of a volatile and rapidly escalating conflict in the Middle East. In recent days, coordinated military strikes by the United States and Israel on multiple targets inside the Islamic Republic of Iran have led to the killing of Spiritual leader, Ayatollah Ali Khameni.

In response, Iran has launched waves of retaliatory missile and drone attacks targeting Israeli territory and U.S. military installations across several Gulf states including Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
