Northern Region NPP Executive Elections: Third Term Chairmanship bid, Battle of Doctors, One-vote victory and the Unopposed:

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Northern Region has elected new regional executives to steer the affairs of the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.


The elections, held on Saturday at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale, brought together 397 delegates who voted to elect executives for the positions of Regional Chairman, First and Second Vice Chairmen, Secretary, Deputy Secretary, Treasurer, Organiser, Youth Organiser, Women Organiser, Nasara Organiser and Communications Director.


Incumbent Regional Chairman, Mohammed Adam Bantima Samba, retained his position after securing 215 votes to defeat his closest contender, Alhaji Inusah Amadu, who polled 122 votes.


Alhaji Inusah Amadu, who was contesting the chairmanship for the third consecutive time, was hoping to finally unseat the incumbent but fell short. Fuseini Musah secured 44 votes, while Salifu A. Rahman Mumin COP, obtained five votes.


The First Vice Chairman position also produced a decisive result, with Ayamba Yelimangli defeating veteran politician Alhaji Iddrisu Sunday by 270 votes to 117.

The Secretary position was a battle of Doctors, with University for Development Studies (UDS) lecturer, Dr. Abdul Rahman Abdul Karim Kpala emerging victorious with 324 votes. His contender, Regional Research Officer Dr. Fuseini Bawa Zakaria, secured 63 votes.


For Deputy Secretary, incumbent Bediako Jeremiah retained his position after polling 176 votes. He defeated Ahmed King Fesail, who obtained 151 votes, and Kaleem M. Ibrahim, who secured 60 votes.


One of the closest contests of the election was the Treasurer position, where Hussein Abubakari Sadiq edged incumbent Mohammed Yussif Toyibu by just one vote.
Hussein Abubakari Sadiq secured 175 votes against Mohammed Yussif Toyibu’s 174, while Damba Abdul Rauf obtained 37 votes.


Hajia Suraiya Manan was elected Women Organiser after securing 153 votes. Hajia Rashida Abdulai followed with 105 votes, while Alice Dawuni obtained 91 votes. Hajia Zenabu Sulemana and Hajia Salamatu A. Rauf polled 30 and eight votes respectively.


In the Youth Organiser contest, Ibrahim Abdul Aziz emerged victorious with 170 votes. Media executive and CEO of Majority Radio, Mohammed Naporo Abubakari, secured 137 votes, while Abdul Mutalib Kwaya Yaantun, Elias Iddrisu (Obama) and Mohammed Nazirul Alhassan obtained 32, 26 and 22 votes respectively.


Ibrahim Mohammed won the Nasara Organiser position with 128 votes. Afishetu Muaz came second with 104 votes, followed by Dipantiche M. Lukman with 42 votes, Saakibu H. Mohammed with 39 votes, Thabit Ibn Issah with 48 votes and Yussif Mozel Alhassan Salman with 26 votes.
There was no contest for the Second Vice Chairman, Organiser and Communications Director positions, as Abdul Rahman Mahama, Salifu Abdul Rashid (COP) and Sayibu Yussif Danjumah were elected unopposed.


In his victory remarks, Chairman Mohammed Adam Bantima Samba pledged to work towards securing a majority of parliamentary seats in the Northern Region for the NPP in the 2028 elections. The NPP currently holds six of the region’s 18 parliamentary seats.

Mr Samba also called for unity within the party, acknowledging the divisions that have characterised the NPP in the region and stressed that a united party would be better positioned to challenge the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2028.
