UDS are FASU Football Champions Again
The University for Development Studies (UDS) have successfully defended their African University Football Championship title after defeating Julius Nyerere University of Guinea 2-1 in a thrilling final of the 12th All-Africa University Games in Cairo, Egypt.
The defending champions endured a physically demanding encounter, marked by injuries, intense challenges and a goalless first half. UDS broke the deadlock 15 minutes after the restart when Abdul Raphui headed home after the Guinean goalkeeper parried Akusaayela Nuhu’s powerful effort into his path.
Julius Nyerere University equalised in the 70th minute with a thunderous strike from outside the penalty area. The match proceeded into extra time after both sides failed to find a winner in regulation time.
Five minutes into the second half of extra time, Ezedeen Alhassan delivered the decisive moment, curling a magnificent free-kick into the top-left corner to secure a 2-1 victory for UDS.
The triumph makes UDS the first university to win the African university football title in consecutive editions. The university also becomes the first institution to simultaneously hold the World University Football Championship, African University Football Championship and West African University Football Championship titles.
UDS have once again demonstrated their resilience and dominance on the continental stage, emerging as champions after a hard-fought final in Cairo.
