NDC Primaries Wrap: David Defeats Goliath As Proverbs Man Falls To Toddler Politician

When Ghana’s next parliament is inaugurated after 2024 elections, Hon. A B A Fuseini, a veteran politician and current Member of Parliament for Sagnarigu will not be part of it. This is as a result of his embarrassing defeat in the NDC Presidential and Parliamentary primaries which took place on Saturday[May 13].

Hon. Fuseini, a man known more for his proverbs than for his work as an MP lost the internal elections, polling 333 votes to fall woefully behind young and upcoming politician, Atta Issah, who garnered 801 of the total valid votes.

Other Contenders in the race were Ahmed Yakubu, Abdul Majeed Alhassan and Hamza Zakaria Abukari who polled 120, 42 and 27 votes respectively.

The defeat of Hon. A B A Fuseini who has been a lawmaker for Sagnarigu since the creation of the constituency in 2012 has been long in the making considering that despite his victory, he is deemed to have performed badly in the 2020 elections. His narrow win over NPP’s Felicia Tacorabama Tettey was a signal his popularity has waned and his end was near.

Elsewhere, in Kumbungu, Ras Mubarak, a former MP, was defeated by incumbent Dr Hamza Adam who secured 538 of the total votes to signal the end of the renaissance of the TV host.

In Karaga, Hon. Sualehu Dandaawa, two term former MP and 2020 Parliamentary Candidate, with 735 votes got his wish to mount a comeback as the delegates overwhelmingly endorsed his candidature over his other contenders.

In Gushegu, 2020 Parliamentary Candidate, Mohammed Yussif Malimali was retained with 580 votes. In Yendi, legal Practitioner and 2020 candidate, Lawyer Alhassan Abdul Fataw Jofa was retained as he polled 842 votes to defeat two other contestants.

In Wulensi, incumbent MP, Hon. Dawuni Abukari, secured victory by the skin of his teeth as his 391 votes means just 19 votes separated him and closest contender Stanley Nandaya who had 372 votes. A third candidate Samuel Nyimakan garnered only 95 votes.

In Mion, another returnee and former Member of Parliament, Hon. Abdul Aziz was defeated heavily alongside other by a certain Misbahu Adams Mahama.

In Savelugu, incumbent Hon. Yakubu Iddrisu Wunbenkpang was retained. In Nanton, Dr. Mohammed Khaliq Sherif overcame stiff opposition to secure the nod to represent the opposition NDC as Parliamentary candidate.

Dr. Osman Tahidu won in Tolon and will likely face a showdown with Deputy Minority Chief whip and NPP MP come 2024. Joseph Bukari Nikpe left it late to secure victory and will represent the NDC as PC for Saboba
