NPP to Rerun Walewale Parliamentary Primary on September 8
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced timeline for re-running the parliamentary primary election in the Walewale Constituency following a High Court ruling.
In a statement, General Secretary, Justin Koduah said the parliamentary candidate elections will take place on Sunday, September 8, 2024.
Accordingly, the party will open nominations on Tuesday[September 3] and close it at close of day on Thursday [September 5.]
Aspiring Parliamentary Candidates (APCs) interested in contesting are required to obtain nomination forms by paying a non-refundable application fee of GHC 3,000. Additionally, candidates must pay a non-refundable filing fee of GHC 35,000 to successfully file their nominations.
Women, youth (defined as individuals between the ages of 18 and 40), and persons with disabilities (PWDs) will receive a 50% discount on the filing fee, reducing it to GHC 17,500.
However, candidates who previously participated in the general parliamentary primary election and paid the filing fees are exempt from paying again.
The re-run of the parliamentary primary is occasioned by a ruling of the Tamale following a petition brought before it by incumbent Lariba Abudu challenging the validity of the election, held on January 27, 2024, which she lost to Kabiru Tia Mahama, a presidential staffer.
The court, after weeks of proceedings, delivered its verdict on Monday September 2, ordering a rerun, saying the initial polls was fraught with notable irregularities.
