Yaa Naa Receives Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from UDS, Urges Parents to Prioritize Children’s Education

The King of Dagbon, His Majesty Ndan Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II, has been conferred an Honorary Doctor of Laws (LL.D) Degree by the University for Development Studies (UDS) in recognition of his contributions to peace, unity, and development in Dagbon and Northern Ghana.

The honour was bestowed on the King during the 24th Congregation of the University held on Saturday, November 16, 2025, in Tamale.

The citation accompanying the honorary degree extolled the Ya-Na’s visionary leadership, peacebuilding efforts, and his unwavering support toward educational advancement in the region.

According to the University, Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II has played a pivotal role in restoring lasting peace in Dagbon, promoting social cohesion, and championing development initiatives that have strengthened academic activities and improved the lives of citizens.

The citation praised his leadership as one marked by wisdom, reconciliation, and a commitment to prosperity.

In his remarks after receiving the honour, the King expressed gratitude to UDS for the recognition and reaffirmed his dedication to the progress of Dagbon and Ghana as a whole.

He emphasized the transformative power of education and called on parents to prioritize their children’s schooling above all else.

He urged families across the region to invest in the future of their wards, stressing that no society could progress without a well-educated population.

He added that both the palace and the classroom must work hand in hand to produce responsible, enlightened citizens capable of contributing to national development.

Vice-Chancellor of UDS, Prof. Seidu Al-Hassan, commended the Ya-Na for his unwavering support to the university and for creating an enabling environment for teaching, learning, and research.

He said the honorary degree reflects the King’s extraordinary leadership and his commitment to peace, education, and development.

The event was attended by traditional leaders, government officials, the academic community, and members of the general public, who applauded the King for his achievements and continuous efforts to uplift the Dagbon kingdom.
