NDC Calls on Police to Question NPP Member Over 2028 Election Violence Post

The National Democratic Congress has called on the Ghana Police Service to invite an NPP social media commentator, Hamza Abdulai Suhuyini, for questioning over a Facebook post suggesting possible gun violence during the 2028 general elections.

Communications Officer for the ruling Party in the Tolon Constituency said Suhuyini’s post raised concerns about public safety, electoral peace and the need to prevent a recurrence of election-related violence ahead of the next general elections.

Commenting on a post on Facebook, Suhuyini reportedly wrote: “He should prepare for more guns shoots(sic) in 2028 because if they come out to fool like they did in 2024, it is going to be hotter for them. It was just the tip of the iceberg.”

According to Mr Dokurugu, the statement appeared to suggest the possibility of further gun-related violence during the 2028 elections and therefore warranted clarification by the appropriate security authorities.

In a press statement, Halid Dokurugu urged the police to examine the context and possible implications of the post as part of investigations into the 2024 election-related shooting incident at Nyankpala.

The incident reportedly resulted in the death of one person identified as Alhaji, while two others sustained injuries.

Mr Dokurugu said inviting Mr Suhuyini for questioning would allow investigators to establish the meaning and context of his remarks and determine whether they had any relevance to the ongoing investigations.

He, however, stressed that his appeal was not intended to prejudge Mr Suhuyini or suggest that he was responsible for the 2024 shooting incident.

Rather, he said the call was aimed at ensuring a thorough, impartial and professional investigation in the interest of justice and national security.

“Ghana’s democracy must be built on peace, tolerance, and respect for human life. No individual or political party should encourage violence or threaten the peace of our nation,” the statement said.

Mr Dokurugu also called for justice for the deceased, protection for the injured and lasting peace for the people of Nyankpala and the country at large.
