NPP Bans MMDCEs And Party Executives From Contesting Incumbent MPs In Primaries

Party Executives and MMDCEs have been banned from contesting incumbent NPP MPs in the party’s parliamentary primaries slated for next year. This is according to a directive issued by the ruling party following a National Executive Council meeting which took place on Monday[April 4].

“The National Council has further barred National, Regional, Constituency Party Executives and MMDCEs from Contesting in Constituencies where the party has sitting Members of Parliament,” a statement by the Party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Koduah stated.

It is unclear what purpose this directive will serve but political watchers say the move is to give some level of protection to incumbent MPs. The decision is to also ensure that the party forges ahead in unity by doing away with the needless tension and acrimony that characterises such contests.

Ahead of Election 2024, the NPP has scheduled its parliamentary primaries in two folds – first, for orphan constituencies which is scheduled to take place between August and December 2023 and secondly for Constituencies where the party has serving MPs which is slated for February next year.

Meanwhile, the party at its National Executive Council meeting also scheduled the much-awaited Presidential Primaries for November 4, 2023.
